Choosing an over-the-counter pain patch should involve more than picking the package that says “strong” or “long lasting.” To choose an OTC pain relief patch before buying, compare the labeled uses, active ingredients, sensation, patch size, package count, and Drug Facts directions.
1. Start with the labeled use
Read the Uses section. It explains the minor symptoms the product is intended to relieve. The official D-Wellness Day & Night label lists temporary relief of minor muscle and joint aches and pains associated with simple backache, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains.
An OTC patch cannot diagnose the cause of pain. Seek medical advice for a significant injury, weakness, numbness, fever, severe pain, or symptoms that persist or worsen.
2. Compare active ingredients
Pain relief patches are not interchangeable. D-Wellness Day & Night includes:
- a cooling patch with camphor, menthol, and methyl salicylate;
- a heating patch with capsaicin and menthol.
Sensation alone does not tell you which product is stronger or more appropriate. Check ingredient concentrations, allergy warnings, and directions. The D-Wellness label tells people prone to allergic reactions from aspirin or salicylates to ask a doctor before use.
For more detail, see menthol vs. capsaicin pain relief patches.
3. Check patch size, count, and value
Confirm how many patches are actually in the package and the size of each patch. Compare cost per patch rather than box price alone. Consider whether the intact patch fits comfortably on a flat area of unbroken skin.
Do not cut a patch unless the exact label or manufacturer expressly says it can be cut. A different brand’s instructions do not apply automatically.
4. Verify time and frequency
Marketing words such as “day,” “night,” and “long lasting” do not replace Directions. For D-Wellness, adults and children 12 and older should clean and dry the area, apply no more than three to four times daily, and remove the patch after no more than eight hours. Ask a doctor about children under 12.
“Night” does not automatically mean the patch can stay on all night. The label’s time limit still applies.
5. Read warnings before checkout
- For external use only.
- Do not use on wounds or damaged skin.
- Do not use with a heating pad.
- Do not bandage tightly.
- Avoid eyes and mucous membranes.
- Stop use at least one hour before bathing or showering.
- Do not use immediately after bathing or showering.
6. Inspect the package and seller
Look for readable Drug Facts, tamper-evident packaging, a lot code, manufacturer or distributor information, and an expiration date when applicable. Be cautious with products that lack complete information or promise to cure every type of pain.
When buying online, confirm the seller, exact quantity, total cost, shipping destination, and current terms. You can view the current D-Wellness Day & Night offering in our store.
